Government Contracting Opportunities and
Certification Workshop for Small Businesses
The Bucks County Department of Community & Business Development and the Bucks County Commissioners are sponsoring a workshop for small business owners interested in government contracting opportunities. Representatives of federal, state and local governments are scheduled to discuss these opportunities at a planned workshop in April.
A similar workshop was held last year with attendees declaring it a valuable resource and a success. This year's session will be held April 28, at Bucks County Community College, Swamp Road, Newtown Township in the college library auditorium, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pre-registration is requested.
Government speakers include: William R. Lyle, Bucks County purchasing director; Curtis Burwell, business enterprise analyst for the state Bureau of Minority & Women Business Opportunities, and Ricardo J. Sacidor, of the U.S. Small Business Administration's Procurement Center. Each will focus on the number of programs and contracting opportunities available for small businesses.
Lyle said the purchasing department is interested in fostering participation by all businesses offering goods and services that may be used by the county. He will present the county's bid and quote opportunities and available online services.
Sacidor is responsible for the review and evaluation of small business programs at federal buying agencies. He will discuss assistance available through the SBA.
Burwell will explain the certification process and discuss how to locate state contracting opportunities, how such contracting will grow a small business, methods used by the state to purchase goods and services, and how state programs can help small businesses make use of these opportunities.
The Bureau of Minority & Women Business Opportunities is part of the Pennsylvania Department of General Services, the main purchasing branch of state government. Its primary functions are to certify minority-owned and women-owned businesses, and to help small businesses become involved in state contracting.
Representatives from Bucks County Community College's Center for Workforce Development, the Bucks County Office of Employment and Training, Inc., Careerlink, Temple University Small Business Development Center, and the Small Business Administration's SCORE counselors also will explain how their programs and services can help grow your business.
The Bucks County Department of Community and Business Development coordinates the Bucks County Commissioners' economic and business initiatives in partnership with the various agencies and groups in the county. Through its programs, the department seeks to create and maintain an economically vibrant, competitive and diversified environment characterized by an enhanced quality of life and opportunities for Bucks County residents and business owners. The Department also acts as a resource to local organizations in targeting the removal of barriers impeding small business formation and entrepreneurship.
Registration forms and a detailed program schedule are available on the County of Bucks website, www.buckscounty.org.
